Media Streaming Information
What You Need To Know

Media streaming is multimedia which is constantly received and displayed to the receiver.

It is delivered without interruption to the receiving end while the provider is sending...over the internet.

This means as soon as the provider delivers the information, it is immediately received by the intended audience.

The term streaming describes the method rather than what is being delivered. So, media streaming is non-interrupted delivery and reception of the media.

The media can be video or audio or any combination of both.

Background Information on Streaming Media
  • Streaming media dates back to the mid- 20th century.
  • In 1970s, streaming technology was successfully done on the computer.
  • In 1980s, the consumer leveled computers were invented.
  • These computers were capable of displaying various kinds of media, such as audio and video.
  • Today, technology has advanced to the point where we can view videos “on- demand”.  This comprises of videos and audios that are stored on a remote server for viewing at user discretion.
  • The server starts streaming the video or audio clip when the user demands for it.
  • This kind of streaming is known as on demand media streaming.
  • Live streaming is a term used for video or audio clips that can be viewed only once and at a particular time. For example, the live recording of the sports event.
  • Today...technologies have enabled us to record streaming audio video moments onto our PC or TV through the use of such software as Internet media player.
  • Streaming media services continue to expand and become better and faster.  This includes such technologies as the streaming media recorder and streaming flash video.

Types of Streaming Media Protocols
  • A protocol is a set of "rules" or methods used to create software  technologies...such as streaming media.
  • There are several types of streaming media protocols.
  • The UDP or User Datagram Protocol is one type used by streaming technologies.
    • In this media, a video or audio clip is converted into sequence of small packets.
    • The packets are then delivered by the server.
    • If demand for a video clip is sent to the server, it will send you the packets of the video clip.
    • These packets are received by your computer. Then the packets are opened and converted into a complete video clip.
    • This is done at a faster rate. Hence you don’t even recognize where one packet starts and where it ends.
    • However in this type of streaming protocol the packets may get lost in between the journey. In such a case, you view a pausing video clip.
  • Other protocols are designed for real time streaming.
