Video Chat
means
Online
Real-time Communication
Video Chat
uses the power of the Internet to communicate in real-time between two
people or groups of people.
It uses interactive
technology that allows
people in two or more locations to conduct two-way communications using
both video and audio. It is not the same as video phone that is deigned
for use between two individuals only.
The technology
behind video online chat is a digital compression system that
compresses video
and audio for streaming in real-time.
The
compressions are sent in
packets of bits and bytes (there are 8 digital 1s or 0s in a bit and
there are 8 bits in a byte). The streaming video online chat is sent
though a
digital network or over the Internet.
The major
components necessary to set up a Video Chat network are:
- Video
input: webcam or video camera
- Video
output: computer monitor, television, or LCD projector
- Audio
input: microphones, head phones, or head sets
- Audio
output: speakers, head phones
- Data
transfer: Internet streaming, digital local area network
- Software
that supports Video Online Chat
It is
not usually necessary to have dedicated systems, unless you intend to
involve large groups. Large group setups are not easy to transport.
The
typical video chat system can be run from any desk top computer or
laptop. Using the equipment listed above will allow you to hold a video
online chat from anywhere in the world that you have access to the
Internet,
either by hard wire, wireless, or satellite access.
The
advantage that video online chat has in the education field is that it
students and teachers can be integrated into a class from any part of
the world.
It allows for virtual field trips by
having the ability to
hold video online chats with professionals at museums or zoos for
example.
University
professors can use Video Chat to:
- Keep
in touch with a class when away from campus
- Use the
services of guest lecturer that is not able to attend due to
scheduling conflicts

Business
professionals can use Video Chat to:
- Hold
short notice meetings with employees in different locations
- Hold
face-to-face meetings without colleagues or customers without leaving
the desk

customers to maintain a strong networking collaboration for
business
and sales
- Allow
employees to work from home and be productive
- Introduce new products to sales
people or customers
- Demonstrate how to complete new
business forms
- Hold
new employee orientation
Legal uses
for Video Online Chat include:
- Taking depositions
from people who are unable to attend for various
reasons
- Allow
defendants to attend legal proceedings from remote locations
Health
field uses include:
- Providing
consultations for people who are in remote locations
- Providing
the ability for physicians to consult with experts in
specific health fields
- Transmission of medical
images for evaluation
- Developing a diagnosis for
patients that may be in isolation
