Windows Media
Server
A Powerful Streaming Feature
Windows
media server is a computing device which stores and plays
various
media files.
Media files may come in audio, video or
a
combination of both.
A server is basically any device that
serves some sort of common function.
In this case, the server serves as
the
player for media files.
Windows Media
Hosting
- The basic purpose of Windows media
hosting server is to
store and share media.
- The media server can be network based or a
standalone media player.
- When
the Windows media server is on network level, it can play the video as
well as audio clips directly from internet.
- A standalone (or PC-based) media
server plays the media files stored on the hard disk of your computer.
Features
of Windows Media Server
- The technical aspects of the
Windows servers make each version distinct from one another.
- The latest version comprises of
Internet Information Services (IIS).
- This is a particular method (protocol)
of storing the media.
- Another requirement is a network connection.
- The speed of the network
connection must be enough so that the media will be played properly.
Depending on requirement, the
WM Server may require a huge amount of computer memory.
It is
required for the data to be accessed on the
computer once it is downloaded.
The media server may also
require a powerful processing unit. RAID, or Redundant Arrays
of Inexpensive Disks may be required for increasing
the storage space of the media server.
The
more space you have available, the more video clips or audio
files
you can store and play.
The storage space also allows
the streamed video clip to play smoothly.
Increased storage,
processing speed, memory and bandwidth all contribute to the successful
retrieval and smooth playback of media files.
Some
of the different versions of media players may also capture
the live
streaming media.
For example, a TV tuner card
may serve as a player for live streaming video and
audio channels.
Live videos or TV serials can be captured and stored on the
computer with the capture option of the TV tuner card.
